Lopinot was founded in 1806 by a French aristocrat named Charles Josef Compte de Loppinot. Under the Cedula arrangement between the Government of 1783 (Spanish) and the French Catholic Settlers from the other Caribbean territories, he came earlier and settled in Tacarigua. That venture failed. Seeking settlement elsewhere, he thus settled in the valley now known as Lopinot where he named his estate
“La Reconnaissance.”
Many years after his death, the estate was left in neglect, but was nevertheless regularly visited by settlers from the Caura Valley and later, La Pastora Estates higher up. These daily visitors from the surrounding ranches brought with them their predominantly Hispanic cultural inheritance.
Additionally, in the late 1940’s, the government relocated the inhabitants of “La Veronica” from nearby Caura Valley to the La Reconnaissance Estate (Lopinot.)
These new settlers brought with them all their Hispanic customs, culture, knowledge of Cocoa planting and agriculture.
Today, Lopinot is testament to the endurance of these traditions through time.
